Launched in early 1991, the W140 series was meant to make people forget the extraordinary W126. This S-Class was more impressive, more performing and more ecological and offered an impressive amount of technology and gadgets. The dimensions, however, were excessive and this series lacked success. Numerous evolutions of the model: in 1991, in Geneva, the 300 SEL, 400 SEL, 500 SEL and 600 SEL were presented. In 1992 the coupe configuration debuted and in 1994 a restyling was conducted, along with the launch of the 420 SEC. Other evolutions were introduced in the following years and production of the W140 ceased in 1998 when the new S-Class (W220) was presented.
