At the 1998 Canadian Grand Prix held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher, starting 3rd, took the lead on lap 45 after a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for forcing Heinz-Harald Frentzen off the track. Despite the penalty and a later minor collision with Pedro Diniz, Schumacher won by over 16 seconds, marking a crucial step in the championship battle against McLaren.
